A gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing approximately 50 people and wounding at least 53 others early Sunday in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
A propaganda outfit tied to ISIS claimed responsibility for the massacre on Sunday afternoon following reports that the shooter had called 911 just before the attack to pledge allegiance to the terrorist organization.
Authorities said that the shooter, Omar Mateen, 29, was shot and killed by police inside the club. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of Orlando's FBI bureau, also told CNN that the shooter appeared to have "leanings towards" Islamic terrorism.
Mateen had previously been investigated by the FBI and interviewed twice, but the inquest was deemed inconclusive. An ATF representative said that Mateen acquired the weapons used in the attack legally.
"It's appears he was organized and well-prepared," the Orlando police chief said at a press conference.
