As the November election nears, the amount of money given to political presidential campaigns reaches unprecedented highs. Last month, former US President Jimmy Carter said the American election fundraising process, threatens the country's democracy to its core. He said the United States' electoral process is riddled with "financial corruption", as it allows corporations to finance candidates.
"We have one of the worst election processes in the world right in the United States of America, and it's almost entirely because of the excessive influx of money," Carter said. Critics argue that the current electoral system makes it virtually impossible for candidates not supported by large money-making corporations to run for office.
